The Artist’s Process
I’ve been interested in photography for the majority of my life in one way or another. Now being back in school for it and letting it completely take hold of day to day life, it’s exciting to see myself improve little by little, day after day. The benefit of practicing more often, is that you start to catch on to what really lights your fire.
Artists have always amazed me, but I’ve recently found that photographing other artists is a new way to really appreciate them and what they do.
Having the opportunity to sit down and observe an artist or craftsperson while they do their work is hypnotizing. The amount of time, hard work, and dedication that is required for their skill to evolve to what they are able to do today, is inspiring to me. So getting to document that process in real time with photos completely amplifies the experience.
Recently, I have had the pleasure of documenting two different kind of makers and I wanted to share my favorite captures here.
Ellie is a potter and runs her small business by attending art shows, creating decorative vases, and fulfilling orders on other functional ware.
I’ve tried to make pottery before and it is no easy task. Watching her make three perfect items before my eyes just blew me away.
The next opportunity I had was on First Friday, an event here in Knoxville, Tennessee.
There are art galleries, crafters, musicians, and artists all over showcasing their work. One display I have been wanting to visit for some time was the glass blowing demonstration at Pretentious Glass and Beer.
I finally made it down, and it did not disappoint.
Watching people that have a passion for the work they do brings me joy and it inspires me to chase after my own passions. I hope you’ve enjoyed the photos. I can’t wait to document more artisans in their element.
Thanks for reading, until next time.
